Spot is walking into the porch gap

The hardest part of delivery automation may be the short walk from the van to the door. Boston Dynamics says it is testing Spot as a last-mile delivery assistant, aimed at the awkward terrain that still resists hubs, sorters, drones, and sidewalk robots.

The demo is simple on purpose. A driver loads two boxes onto a conveyor payload mounted on Spot, then the robot walks through a suburban route, crouches near the porch, and places each package at the doorstep before returning to the vehicle.

The target is what Boston Dynamics calls the "porch gap": the final 50 feet of delivery. That stretch is expensive, physical, and inconsistent. Driveways slope. Steps vary. Trash bins, sprinklers, pets, snow, and pedestrians turn every address into a small navigation problem.

That makes Spot a useful test case for legged service robots. The company says Spot has a 14 kg payload capacity and more than 1,500 robots already in customer hands, mostly in industrial inspection, hazardous response, construction, and energy sites. Delivery asks the same machine to operate around the public, not only trained workers.

Boston Dynamics is still looking for logistics partners. The stated goal is a pilot where Spot works with a driver to deliver 200 packages a day, five days a week. Early routes may start under driver control, then be saved for autonomous repeat visits to known addresses.

The real question is not whether Spot can carry a box. It is whether a robot can fit into the human choreography of delivery: where the driver waits, how packages are staged, how customer preferences are respected, and when a teleoperator steps in.

If the porch gap becomes a robot job, the winning system will look less like a replacement courier and more like a field-tested tool for removing the hardest steps from an already human workflow.
