What the role actually is

Shield AI is hiring a principal designer for Special Projects in the Hivemind organization. The role designs and builds user experiences for agentic AI products, engineering workflow tools, autonomy model lifecycle tooling, evaluation dashboards, trace inspection, observability, and verification surfaces.

This is a highly technical product design role. The listing expects someone who can prototype in production React and TypeScript, conduct research with engineers and operators, and establish reusable interaction patterns for AI-heavy internal products.

What you would work on

• Design interfaces for agentic AI products, engineering platforms, and enterprise AI applications
• Shape interaction patterns for streaming responses, citations, multimodal input, artifacts, and human review
• Design evaluation, trace inspection, observability, and verification surfaces for foundation-model autonomy
• Conduct research with engineers, operators, and executives, then convert findings into product decisions

• Principal-level software interface design experience from research through shipped product
• Strong React and TypeScript ability for production-quality prototypes or implementations
• Experience designing LLM-powered experiences, developer tools, dashboards, or debugging surfaces
• Comfort with user research, design systems, data visualization, and ambiguous technical products

Why this one is worth a look

This role is useful evidence that autonomy companies need designers inside the model and tooling layer, not only on operator screens. The caveat is that it is defense work and unusually technical, but the design problems are squarely about making AI systems inspectable and governable.
